kidnapping plot

TRAVERSE CITY, MI--   Defense lawyers for the men accused of trying to kidnap Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer are likely to argue that their clients were all talk and no action.

It's the same argument that was used by members of a different Michigan paramilitary group a decade ago when they were accused of scheming to overthrow the U.S. government. It worked so well that a federal judge took the rare step of dismissing most charges against the extremist group known as Hutaree, without giving the jury a say.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says President Donald Trump is inciting “domestic terrorism” following “lock her up” chants at his rally in the state.

Whitmer told NBC's “Meet the Press” Sunday that it's “incredibly disturbing” coming about a week after authorities said they thwarted alleged plots to kidnap the Democratic governor and storm the state Capitol. Fourteen people have been charged.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)--   An FBI agent has testified that members of anti-government paramilitary groups who plotted to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also discussed abducting Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam.

The agent said Tuesday that both governors were mentioned during a June meeting in Ohio of extremists from several states. No one has been charged with plotting against Northam.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Among the protesters who rallied at the Michigan Capitol against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s coronavirus lockdown this past spring were armed men now accused in plots to kidnap her, storm the Capitol and start a “civil war.”

The development has sparked scrutiny of the rallies as potential recruitment events. The demonstrations were organized by conservative groups opposed to the Democratic governor’s orders. They also drew members of paramilitary groups carrying rifles.
