LANSING, MI (AP)--   A top health official is defending Michigan’s handling of nursing home residents infected with the coronavirus. 

Robert Gordon is director of the state Department of Health and Human Services. He told lawmakers Wednesday that Michigan's performance is “strong” compared with other states.

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan National Guard will assist with COVID-19 testing in six Upper Peninsula communities this week. 

On Friday testing will be held at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; in the St. Ignace Area Schools parking lot from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and the Kingsford Middle/High School parking lot from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced today it is greatly expanding testing criteria for COVID-19 to provide access to additional residents who do not have symptoms but are at risk. 

LANSING, MI--   Approximately 350,000 Michigan families will continue to have access to additional food assistance benefits in the month of May in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced today.

The additional food assistance was initially approved for March and April – and now that is being extended for May. 

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has changed the way it reports data on COVID-19 testing.

The change makes the data more accurate and relevant as the state continues to expand diagnostic testing to help slow and contain the spread of COVID-19. The update to the website separates out the results of two different types of tests – serology and diagnostic. Michigan – along with some other states – has not separated data for diagnostic and serology tests.

SENEY, MI--   The Seney National Wildlife Refuge is modifying operations to comply with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services suggestions. 

The visitor center remains closed and all public events scheduled for May are canceled, but officials say outdoor spaces will remain open. More than 10 miles of foot paths can be used for hiking; miles of backcountry roads are open for hiking or bicycling; and the Marshland Wildlife Drive will open May 15, as will the fishing loop and designated pools for fishing.
