CALUMET TOWNSHIP, MI--   A police dog found an endangered juvenile in Houghton County this week.

On Wednesday, Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Calumet Township on a report of a suicidal male. The boy had fled the residence with a knife.

A Michigan State Police K-9 from the Calumet Post was brought to the scene. The dog tracked the juvenile through a residential district into a large wooded area and found the boy, who was unharmed.

The juvenile was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital for evaluation.

CALUMET, MI--   An armed woman who was shot by Michigan State Police at a Hubbell residence Monday night is in critical condition.

Troopers from the Calumet Post responded to a report of shots fired at the house and encountered the 28-year-old woman outside with a gun. She refused to drop the firearm. Officers say they feared for the safety of an elderly person inside the house, and when the woman tried to go back inside they fired their weapons.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital then transferred to a Green Bay facility, where she remains in critical condition.

HUBBELL, MI--   Officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Houghton County.

Monday around 9:15 p.m. Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post and a deputy from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of shots fired at a Hubbell residence. Officers encountered a 28-year-old woman armed with a gun outside the house. The officers repeatedly commanded the woman to put the firearm down, but she refused and tried to go back into the residence with the gun.

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Chassell man was killed in a single-vehicle crash over the weekend.

Sunday around 9:40 p.m. troopers from the Calumet Post were dispatched to Superior Road near Haapapuro Road in Portage Township. They say Rodney Barnes, 50, of Chassell was southbound when he lost control of his vehicle on the icy roadway. The vehicle slid sideways into the ditch, overturned and hit a tree.

Barnes wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.

HUBBELL, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Calumet post are looking for information about a motorcycle stolen from a Hubbell home.

Troopers say it happened sometime between 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The bike is an orange and black 110cc SSR that has an aftermarket exhaust pipe.

BARAGA TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was killed in a traffic crash in Baraga Township Friday. 

Troopers from the Calumet Post were dispatched around 4:10 p.m. to US-41 near the Pines Convenience store. They say a 48-year-old Pelkie woman was southbound when she tried to make a left turn into the gas station parking lot. She turned into the path of a northbound pickup driven by a 69-year-old Wisconsin man.

CALUMET, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post are investigating a suspicious fire. 

Troopers responded around 5:10 p.m. Sunday to a residential fire on Cedar Street in Calumet Township. They think the fire began sometime between 4:40 and

5:10 p.m. A male subject was seen just prior to it starting and he left just before the fire was observed.

The house sustained moderate damage to its exterior.

SPURR TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post are investigating a drowning in Spurr Township.

Monday around 2 p.m. troopers were dispatched to Ned Lake. Preliminary investigation indicates Gary Stroud, 71, of Amasa apparently fell into the lake and drowned while tending to his boat that was moored near the lakeshore.

Stroud was recovered from the water, confirmed deceased and taken to Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

BARAGA TOWNSHIP, MI--   Troopers are calling a shooting in Baraga County over the weekend accidental. 

State Police from the Calumet Post received a report Saturday around 12:50 a.m. that a man had been shot at a residence in Baraga Township. Officers found a 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and a 28-year-old Ashland, Wisconsin man who was giving the victim first aid.

CALUMET, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post are looking for information on the theft of a 2004 ATV.    

The Yamaha Raptor was taken from a residence in Franklin Township sometime after 9 p.m. on May 20 and 4:30 p.m. on the 21st.

The ATV is white with a red frame. The VIN is #JY4AJ11Y44C007273.

Officials say it was not in running condition and was likely hauled in a trailer or truck.
