Michigan State Police Negaunee Post

MARQUETTE, MI--   A homicide investigation is underway after human remains found in Marquette County were positively identified.

Michigan State Police say the remains found August 4 are those of Jody Dean Howe, 58, who was reported missing in August 2019. Howe was last seen on video surveillance at Meijer the morning of August 23, 2019.

A forensic autopsy of the remains was performed at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The cause of death has not been released.

The case remains under investigation.

UPDATE: Officials say the Lexington, Kentucky woman has died in the UPHS-Marquette ICU. She has been identified as Yookyung Leemazzoni, 42. 


MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Lexington, Kentucky woman is in critical condition following a near-drowning at Little Presque Isle in Marquette Township.


MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   Three swimmers had to be rescued Sunday after they were swept out to Lake Superior at Little Presque Isle. 

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post were dispatched to the area after a 38-year-old man, 10-year-old girl and 11-year-old boy were caught in a strong undercurrent. They were about 150 yards from shore when bystanders heard them yelling for help.

WEST BRANCH TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post are investigating a death in West Branch Township.

Friday around 3 p.m. troopers were dispatched to 215 Ventura, where they discovered a deceased 41-year-old woman.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab, detectives and evidence technicians assisted at the scene. The cause of death has not been determined at this time.

Officials say there are no suspects at large in the case.

The incident remains under investigation. The woman’s name has not yet been released.

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A Marquette Township man was injured in what police are calling a meth fire.

Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team were requested to assist troopers from the Negaunee Post at Whetstone Apartments. Troopers who arrived first at the scene determined a man was trying to manufacture meth when a chemical reaction started a fire in the bathroom of his apartment.

The suspect sustained burns and was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment.

NATIONAL MINE--   Michigan State Police from the Negaunee post are investigating a suspicious house fire.

Troopers were dispatched early Friday morning to a house in National Mine. When they arrived the residence was completely engulfed.

Three women who had reportedly been in the residence were arrested on unrelated charges.

The MSP Fire Investigator is looking into the cause of the fire.

CHRISTMAS, MI--   An Alger County man has been arrested by Michigan State Police for multiple felonies related to meth. 

On Saturday troopers from the Negaunee Post conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for improper lane driving on M-28 near Christmas. The 28-year-old driver showed signs of being under the influence of an intoxicating substance. Investigation led to the driver’s arrest for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI--   A three-vehicle crash in Negaunee Township injured two people.

Michigan State Police say Wednesday around noon a pickup driven by Gary Perala of Negaunee was eastbound on US-41 near Marquette Powersports when his truck crossed several lanes of traffic. It struck two vehicles in the westbound lanes.

Perala was taken to UPHS-Marquette for a non-life-threatening head injury.

One of the other drivers, Donna Eliassen of Negaunee, had to be extricated from her vehicle. She was also taken to UPHS-Marquette with injuries to her lower body.

HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP, MI--   Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post are investigating a fatal traffic accident in Humboldt Township. 

Troopers were dispatched Wednesday around 3:20 p.m. to US-41 just east of Wolf Lake Road. Preliminary investigation indicates a 61-year-old man from Champion drove off the right side of the road. His vehicle came to rest on the driver’s side.

Bystanders found the man unresponsive. He was taken to UPHS-Marquette and pronounced dead.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the accident.

BIG BAY, MI--   Deep snow hindered troopers’ attempts to find a woman reported missing in Powell Township. 

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post were dispatched Monday around 3 a.m. to County Road 510 on a report of a missing person. A 39-year-old Big Bay woman was trying to access a rural camp when her vehicle became stuck in snow and she didn’t arrive where she was expected.
