More come forward as Nassar survivors

Oct 22, 2018

ANN ARBOR, MI (MPRN)--   The total number of survivors who have come forward in the Larry Nassar case is now around 500.

Michigan State University reached a settlement with 332 survivors last May, but 167 additional survivors made new claims by the September 10th deadline set by the Michigan legislature.

That brings the total to about 500 women and girls who have accused Larry Nassar of sexually assaulting them.

EAST LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Research out of Michigan State University will look at a possible link between opioid overdose and suicide.

The research is connected to a current study looking at suicide prevention for people recently released from jail.

Dr. Jennifer Johnson is a researcher on the study. She says in monitoring subjects with a risk of suicide they began to see a trend.

“Overdose is probably, if I had to guess our number one method that we’re seeing in our sample for people who are thinking about or attempting suicide.”

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan State University says the National Collegiate Athletic Association has ended its inquiry into the school’s handling of sexual misconduct complaints. The school announced the end of the inquiry Thursday.

The NCAA began its review in January. It stemmed from revelations that former MSU sports doctor Larry Nassar sexually assaulted his patients for decades. The organization later broadened its inquiry after an ESPN program unearthed concerns over how the men’s football and basketball programs handled possible sexual misconduct of their players.

MSU announces search committee for new president

EAST LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan State University has named a search committee to find a new president.

The school has been under fire since hundreds of women said they were sexually assaulted by former MSU sports doctor, Larry Nassar. During Nassar’s sentencing, multiple women said they reported Nassar to school officials – who did nothing.

Since then, the school’s longtime president, Lou Anna K. Simon resigned, and controversial interim president John Engler has taken over.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MPRN)--   US Senators grilled former Michigan governor John Engler about his leadership at Michigan State University. Engler is currently interim president of MSU.

The hearing was one of three so far in response to Larry Nassar. Nassar is the former MSU sports doctor who sexually assaulted his patients for decades and will spend decades in prison.

Engler came under fire during the hearing for statements he made about some survivors and recent hires at the school.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MPRN)--   Michigan State University’s interim president will appear before a US Senate subcommittee on Tuesday.

The subcommittee has held multiple meetings in response to former MSU and USA Gymnastics sports doctor Larry Nassar. Nassar sexually assaulted hundreds of his patients and will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Former Michigan governor, and current MSU interim president, John Engler, said he’s excited to have an opportunity to share the progress and changes Michigan State has made.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Details of a proposed settlement between Michigan State University and survivors of Larry Nassar have come to light, but a condition of the settlement has upset some state lawmakers.

Nassar is the former MSU sports doctor who will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for sexually assaulting his patients.

More than 300 Nassar survivors would receive about a half a billion dollars if the settlement goes through.

EAST LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan State University says it won’t voluntarily turn over thousands of documents requested by the state Attorney General. But a judge might order it to turn over some of them.

The Attorney General’s special prosecutor is investigating MSU for its handling of former sports doctor Larry Nassar. Nasser is in prison for sexually abusing his patients for decades.

The university said it won’t turn over certain documents because of attorney-client privilege.

EAST LANSING, MI (AP)--   The tumultuous era of Michigan State University interim president John Engler is expected to end by June 2019.

The university's governing board announced the timeline Wednesday for selecting Engler's replacement. He was tapped to lead the university in February amid a crisis surrounding former sports doctor Larry Nassar.

Nassar, who also worked for USA Gymnastics, is now imprisoned for sexually abusing hundreds of girls and women while employed at Michigan State.

120 Nassar survivors call for Engler’s removal

EAST LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Survivors of sexual assault want Michigan State University interim president John Engler gone.

More than 100 survivors of disgraced MSU sports doctor Larry Nassar called for Engler’s termination Tuesday.

The move stems from emails between Engler and an aide published by the Chronicle of Higher Education. In the emails, Engler said survivors are being manipulated by attorneys.

Hundreds of survivors are suing the school for failing to prevent Larry Nassar from abusing patients while he was on the faculty there.
