LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The state House of Representatives started an investigation into Michigan State University Thursday.

It stems from a former Michigan State University sports doctor’s criminal conduct.

Larry Nassar was sentenced this week for multiple cases of sexual assault against female patients. During his sentencing proceeding, more than a dozen women blamed MSU for letting Nassar continue to treat patients under their watch.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon has yielded to demands that she step down over MSU’s handling of the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal.

Many of Nassar’s victims were among those calling on Simon to quit. They say MSU officials ignored their complaints about Nassar over the past 20 years, when Lou Anna Simon served as MSU’s president. They blame a culture at MSU that allowed the abuse to happen.

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   A Michigan State University trustee is calling for the university president to resign over the school's handling of the sexual assault scandal involving former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

Trustee Mitch Lyons issued a statement Saturday breaking ranks with fellow board members who said a day earlier they supported President Lou Anna Simon.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Republican and Democratic leaders in the state Legislature are all calling for the removal of Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon.

Lawmakers say they’ve lost confidence in her leadership because of the handling of the Larry Nassar scandal. Support for Simon in the Legislature collapsed as, Nassar, the former MSU sports doctor faces sentencing for abusing athletes. For many hours this week in open court, women directed emotional statements to the man who abused them as children, and toward MSU officials who they say ignored the problem.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)--   Michigan is home to about 465 bee species, according to a first-ever census that scientists hope will provide information helpful for conserving them.

Michigan State University entomologists spent several years compiling the list from published literature, museum specimens and field observations.

Professor Rufus Isaacs says many of the species are types that most people wouldn't know about or might not recognize as bees. About 70 percent of bee species nest underground.

EAST LANSING, MI (AP)--   A federal judge must decide in the coming weeks whether to order Michigan State University to allow campus space to be rented for white nationalist Richard Spencer to give a speech this month.

A lawsuit filed Sunday night against MSU in federal court in western Michigan seeks a preliminary injunction forcing the school to let a Spencer supporter rent a room or hall.

EAST LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan State University has denied a request to rent space to a group headed by white nationalist Richard Spencer.

The university said in a statement Thursday that the decision was made "due to significant concerns about public safety." It cites last weekend's "tragic violence" in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Michigan State officials say they support "freedom of expression" but their "first obligation" is to safety and security on campus.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says a sports doctor accused of sexually assaulting nine young gymnasts is a "monster."

Schuette spoke to reporters Wednesday after filing 22 charges against Dr. Larry Nassar, a former doctor at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics.

Schuette replied "absolutely" when asked if more charges are coming.

Schuette says the victims were girls or teens who were molested at Nassar's home, his Michigan State clinic or a gymnastics club in Eaton County.

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   A Michigan doctor accused of sexually abusing gymnasts has been hit with a new lawsuit by 18 women and girls who say they were molested by him, mostly at his clinic at Michigan State University.

The lawsuit against Dr. Larry Nassar was filed Tuesday in federal court in western Michigan. It also names Michigan State and USA Gymnastics. Nassar was affiliated with the group.

EAST LANSING, MI (AP)--   Lawyers for 13 women and girls have told Michigan State University that they plan to sue the school over alleged sexual assaults by a doctor who also worked for USA Gymnastics.

A notice was filed Tuesday in the Court of Claims. It's a procedural step under state law.

The letter accuses Dr. Larry Nassar of "digital penetration" without proper notice "under the guise of providing care" at his office at Michigan State, from 1996 to 2015. Attorney Stephen Drew says most were gymnasts from across Michigan.
