Munising Bay

MUNISING, MI--   A Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer is being credited with saving the life of someone swimming in Lake Superior. 

Officer Mark Zitnik was on a boat on Munising Bay Saturday when he heard someone calling for help. Two swimmers had been wading in shallow water on a sandbar about 200 yards from him when they ended up in deep water with a strong current.

MUNISING, MI--   The Alger County Sheriff’s Office is telling snowmobilers to stay off the ice after a machine fell through near Munising Bay Tuesday. 

Officials say two people were riding the snowmobile when it broke through the ice about two miles north of Grand Island Landing. Both were able to make their way off the ice.

Fluctuating temperatures have made ice around the Great Lakes unstable. Deputies say it’s thin around Munising and snowmobilers should refrain from riding on the ice.

MUNISING, MI--   A teenaged boy has been rescued from thin ice in Alger County.

Tuesday around 9:20 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies received a call from James Zielinski, 17. He said he was on ice near the Munising City Dock on Munising Bay and the ice was beginning to crack.

City Police responded and saw Zielinski on the bay about 50 feet east of the dock. The Alger County Rescue 21 team was able to reach Zielinski with a Rapid Deployment Craft and bring him to shore.

EMS personnel treated Zielinski for low body temperature. He was then released to his father.

MUNISING, MI--   The Alger County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent drowning in Munising Bay.

Officials received a call Wednesday around 12:35 p.m. regarding what appeared to be a body floating in the 

water. Deputies and Rescue 21 personnel responded and located the body near the west side of the bay.

The victim was an 81-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Preliminary findings indicate she ventured out into Lake Superior sometime after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation.

ALGER COUNTY, MI--   A snowmobile accident on Munising Bay over the weekend injured one person.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office says Saturday around 4:30 p.m. It received a report of a crash near the East Channel Lighthouse. Officials say Danielle Kolbus of Christmas was driving her sled when it hit a large mogul or chunk of ice. Kolbus was ejected from the snowmobile.

Alger County Rescue 21 used a hovercraft to retrieve Kolbus from the ice. She was taken to Munising Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
