The Bach Festival Concert was part of Bachfest Marquette in the fall of 2018, and featured an all Bach program, for instrumentation from duets to quintets.  The Woodwind Studio Recital, also from that fall, featured Mozart, Handel and Charpentier.

Tune in for the 2nd Annual Brass Bonanza, featuring the Far North Brass, the MSO Brass Quintet, and a combined ensemble, from February 2019.  Following that are the four B’s of classical with the Senior Recital of NMU Music student Jordan Mytty, and piano music of Brahms, Beethoven, Bach and Bloch (February 2018).

“Chant and Praise” is the theme of the NMU Choirs & NMU Orchestra concert from April 2019, where each ensemble is featured and then combined for their final piece.  Then, join the Marquette Choral Society for their Russian Nights concert (also from April 2019), featuring Rachmaninoff’s All Night Vigil and more.

Take in two NMU faculty concerts on this program from the 2018-19 academic year, with Dr. Nancy Zimmerman at piano and Dr. Jeffrey Vickers at saxophone.  Piano works include classic music of Debussy, Beethoven and Bach, while saxophone works include more recent repertoire from Lemay and Zupko.

The NMU Music Student Performance Competition rewards students with scholarships, but also rewards you with very fine musicianship; from a concert in March of 2018, hear music of Khachaturian, Brubeck and John Williams. 

Then, prepare for a percussive concert from the NMU Percussion Ensemble’s November 2017 performance, with music of Rossini, McKenzie and Gene Koshinski.

Come together in sound with two concerts from February 2019!  The NMU Jazz Band and University Choir concert featured music of The Beatles, Gershwin, Monk and more.  Follow that with the Piano Duet Festival concert and hear duets of all kinds from local piano teachers and their students.

Marquette Choral Society / Travel Marquette

This April 2019, the Marquette Choral Society presents "Russian Nights," music of Rachmaninoff & Chesnokov.  The concert consists of Russian music, mostly of Orthodox traditions.  Pieces featured are Sergei Rachmaninoff's "All Night Vigil, Op. 37" in Church Slavonic, Pavel Chesnokov's "Let Thy Good Spirit" and "Salvation is Created," in English, as well as a Russian folk song "Veniki".

Northern Lights Acapella Facebook Page

The Northern Lights A Capella group will perform their spring concert Saturday, April 6th at the Reynolds Recital Hall.  Junior music major Anna Morrison came to our studios to talk about the kinds of songs you could expect to hear, the comparison of performing in an acoustic space compared to performing with a mixdown, and whether or not Toto's "Africa" will be on the roster of songs:

The Percussion Group Cincinnati will perform and make connections to social justice as a part of the Siril Concert Series, sponsored by the Siril Endowment for the Arts and NMU's Music Department.  One of the members of the trio, Allen Otte, joined Dr. Jim Strain of the NMU Music Dept. in conversation with Classiclectic host Kurt Hauswirth, to discuss all the percussive events this week:


Public Radio 90

The Northern Michigan University Orchestra will perform a Children's Concert for free Wednesday, February 27th at 6pm.  The program is ideal for all ages, but especially catered to children with an exciting program and demonstrations of instruments of the orchestra.

Selections include music from the motion pictures Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Gladiator, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
