Cedar Tree Institute

Water Rising is a MI Humanities Council grant that brings a project by the same name here to the UP. The Cedar Tree Institute is the recipient of this grant. Cedar Tree Institute is a nonprofit organization in Marquette, providing services and initiating projects in the areas of mental health, religion, and the environment. Other partners include; Marquette's Arts & Culture division, NMU's College of Art & Design, the Fresh Coast Film Festival, and Superior Watershed Partnership.

Pasqua Warstler (Project Director and Grant Writer) and Jon Magnuson (Director of the Cedar Tree Institute and grant recipient) spoke with Kurt Hauswirth at Public Radio 90 about the project in an overview of what the grant will help achieve, and the events and collaborations of Water Rising:


Pure Michigan

Fayette's historic hotel will feature musician and songwriter Steve Hooper from Under This Cold Sky productions.  He will be there to help in the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Historical Fayette State Park, with a combination of traditional and modern folk styles that pay tribute to the land, the people and the folklore of the Upper Peninsula.

ArtPrize displays art from far and wide, and in the case of the Upper Peninsula, represents life and artistic endeavours from a geographically remote region.  Pasqua Warstler, the Artistic Director of the Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba, Kathleen Conover, Marquette ArtPrize artist, and Tom Nemacheck, Director of the UP Travel and Recreation Association came together to discuss the importance of the UP's representation at ArtPrize.

Kurt Hauswirth spoke by phone with Pasqua Warstler, artistic director of the Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba, MI, and Brian Kakas, associate professor of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University and ArtPrize artist, about "Crossing the Straits," a Mackinac Island ArtPrize 2018 Preview.  The preview includes an exhibition and opening reception beginning Sunday August 12 on the island.
