pipeline tunnel

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)--   Democratic presidential hopeful Jay Inslee is wading into a Great Lakes regional controversy by coming out against a proposed oil pipeline tunnel.

The Washington state governor opposes a plan favored by Enbridge Inc. to route the company's Line 5 pipeline through a tunnel that would be built beneath the Straits of Mackinac, the channel linking Lakes Huron and Michigan.

The tunnel segment would replace dual pipes that have run across the straits bottomlands for 66 years.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   A controversial plan to build a tunnel that houses a crude oil and natural gas liquids pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac is one step closer to reality.

Governor Rick Snyder signed a bill Wednesday.

It creates a tunnel oversight commission and lets Snyder’s tunnel plan move forward.

Environmental groups oppose the move. They say running oil in a pipeline under the Straits is too risky for the Great Lakes.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Legislation that would allow for a proposed multi-use tunnel to send oil and natural gas liquids under the Straits of Mackinac passed in the state Senate Wednesday.

The plan is controversial because it would allow the decades-old Line 5 to stay open while the tunnel is built. Possibly for a decade.

Legislation approved by the Senate calls for a commission to oversee the multi-use tunnel that would be built and used by Enbridge Energy.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan Governor Rick Snyder hopes to use the final weeks of his tenure to lock in a deal allowing construction of a hotly debated oil pipeline tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac – a plan his successor opposes but may be powerless to stop.

The Republican and his team are working on several fronts to seal an agreement with Canadian oil transport giant Enbridge for replacing the underwater segment of its Line 5. The pipeline carries oil and natural gas liquids between Wisconsin and Ontario, and traverses northern Michigan.

MARQUETTE, MI--   The state and Enbridge Energy have reached an agreement to pursue construction of a tunnel underneath the Straits of Mackinac, a move designed to mitigate the environmental risk of a leak by containing the spill within the tunnel.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   A controversial pipeline that carries crude oil and natural gas liquids under the Straits of Mackinac is on its way toward being decommissioned. Sort of.

On Tuesday, Governor Rick Snyder’s administration announced an agreement with Enbridge, the owners of the decades old Line 5 pipeline.
