Representative Larry Inman

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)--   A judge says he has “serious questions” about evidence against a Michigan lawmaker who faces a second trial on corruption charges.

Federal Judge Robert Jonker set a Aug. 21 deadline for prosecutors to respond if Rep. Larry Inman asks to have two remaining charges dismissed.

Inman is a Republican from the Traverse City area. He's accused of trying to trade votes for campaign money. A jury in December acquitted him of lying to the FBI but couldn’t reach a verdict on charges of attempted extortion and soliciting a bribe.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Court of Appeals has rejected the appeal of a group trying to remove indicted state Rep. Larry Inman from office. The court agreed Friday with officials who disqualified recall petitions that had a missing word. In a 2-1 ruling, the court says petitions must strictly comply with wording approved by the state. Nearly 14,000 signatures were submitted to force a recall election for Inman, a Traverse City-area Republican whom a jury acquitted of lying to the FBI.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The leader of the Michigan House says an indicted lawmaker will continue to have no committee assignments or staff under his watch after a jury acquitted him of lying to the FBI and deadlocked on attempted extortion and bribery charges.

A spokesman for House Speaker Lee Chatfield said Wednesday that “nothing has changed” with the status of Rep. Larry Inman. Inman was charged in May with seeking a bribe from a labor union in exchange for a vote to not overturn Michigan's prevailing wage law.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (MPRN)--   The trial of State Representative Larry Inman ended in a mistrial Tuesday.

The lawmaker narrowly avoided a criminal conviction.

After over 12 hours of deliberation the jury couldn’t make a final decision on two of the three charges against Inman. They found him not guilty of lying to the FBI, and a judge declared a mistrial on the other two corruption charges.

Inman was visibly relieved when the verdict was read and says now he’ll return to the legislature.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (MPRN)--   The criminal trial of Representative Larry Inman is underway in Grand Rapids.

The Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives testified Thursday.

Larry Inman is accused of trying to sell his vote last year. His lawyers argue that he didn’t change his vote for cash, he did it cause he was scared of reprisal from his boss—the Speaker.

Speaker Lee Chatfield disputed that in court Thursday. He said he wasn’t going to go after Inman for his vote either way and that he seemed to be desperate for campaign cash.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (AP)--   A federal judge says a Michigan legislative leader must testify at the trial of a lawmaker who’s charged with attempted extortion, bribery and lying to an FBI agent.

House Speaker Lee Chatfield, a Republican, isn’t accused of wrongdoing himself. But prosecutors want to ask him questions about Republican Rep. Larry Inman during the trial that starts next week.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   A group of voters has filed almost 14,000 signatures to try and oust Republican state Representative Larry Inman.

Inman is facing a federal trial for charges that include bribery and lying to law enforcement.

Chris Cooke is Inman’s attorney. He says the petition makes it sound like Inman has been convicted.

“I think you can’t violate somebody’s constitutional right against a presumption of innocence, stick that on a recall petition, as if he’s been convicted of a crime. I just think that’s patently unfair in our society.”

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)--   Work has started on gathering petition signatures toward possibly recalling a Michigan lawmaker facing federal charges of trading votes for campaign money.

Republican Rep. Larry Inman has denied any wrongdoing and has rebuffed a formal call from the Michigan House that he resign from his Traverse City-area seat.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A Michigan lawmaker has returned to session for the first time in months after being charged with trading votes for campaign money.

Rep. Larry Inman, a Republican from Williamsburg near Traverse City, was back on the House floor Tuesday, days after his colleagues formally voted to call for his resignation. He says he recently completed 11 weeks of treatment for an addiction to painkillers stemming from having five surgeries over a two-year period, and now "my brain is clear."

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Democrats and the mayor of Traverse City are launching a campaign to force the resignation of state Rep. Larry Inman, who was charged in an alleged scheme to trade votes for campaign money.

The Grand Traverse Democratic Party, Mayor Jim Carruthers and others announced Thursday they hope to collect thousands of signatures calling for the Republican lawmaker to resign. Inman was indicted on federal charges in May and has been removed from legislative committees.
