CLEVELAND, OH--   Cliffs Natural Resources says its employees represented by the United Steelworkers Union at the Empire and Tilden mines have ratified a new labor contract.

The contract includes workers at the Hibbing Taconite and United Taconite mines in Minnesota.

The three-year deal is effective retroactive to October 1, 2015 and lasts through September 30, 2018.  It covers about 2,000 USW-represented employees at Cliffs operations.

CLEVELAND, OH--   Cliffs Natural Resources has signed a 20-year agreement with WEC Energy Group to provide a long-term, reliable, and affordable source of power for the Tilden Mine.

If approved, the new agreement would result in 170 megawatts of new generation across two U.P. sites.  Officials say the plan allows for the retirement of the Presque Isle Power Plant by 2020 and is expected to save money for Upper Peninsula customers.

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   Iron ore shipments out of Marquette's Upper Harbor are down dramatically, prompting fears about the future of Empire Mine.

According to the Lake Carriers' Association, roughly 460,000 tons of iron ore shipped out of Marquette last month, compared with about 732,000 tons in November 2014.

The Mining Journal reports a similar downward trend was also seen throughout the Great Lakes, according to the association's report. Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 4.9 million tons in November, a decrease of 17 percent compared to a year ago.

MARQUETTE, MI--     The contract between United Steelworkers and Cliffs Natural Resources has been extended 30 days.

It was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

Officials say both sides agreed to include a rolling 168-hour extension if negotiations go past the 30-day period.

USW Local 4974 covers workers at the Tilden mine, and Local 4950 covers workers at the Empire mine.  In a negotiations update union officials say progress has been made on some issues, but the parties remain deeply divided on others.

The contract extension begins Thursday.

MARQUETTE, MI--   WE Energies has officially asked the Midwestern grid operator—MISO—to terminate System Support Resource payments for the Presque Isle Power Plant.

Tilden one of four mines agreeing to reduce emissions

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (AP)--   The Environmental Protection Agency has reached a tentative settlement with four iron mines in Minnesota and Michigan that's aimed at reducing haze over pristine areas including Voyageurs and Isle Royale national parks and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

The settlement was first announced by U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, who represents northeastern Minnesota's Iron Range. It applies to processing plants at the United Taconite, Hibbing Taconite and Minorca mines in Minnesota, and the Tilden mine on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

ISHPEMING, MI--   An employee of the Tilden mine has died in a work-related fall near the concentrator.

Cliffs Natural Resources says Gary Hytinen, 61, of Ishpeming was working as a reagent handler in the

unloading area Friday around 1:45 p.m. when he apparently fell from a railroad tanker car to the ground.  Company emergency medical technicians and Bell Hospital EMS responded to the scene.  Hytinen was transported to Bell, where he was pronounced dead.

PALMER, MI--   The Empire Mine’s days are numbered.

That’s according to Cliffs Natural Resources Chief Executive Joseph Carrabba, who says its operations will decrease in coming months and cease altogether in late 2014 or early 2015.

Carraba spoke about the plans Tuesday morning in Marquette.

The Empire opened in 1963 and has produced 260 million tons of iron ore.  Carrabba says the mine has been a "huge success" but says its viability is declining. He says the closing “will be a very progressive process."

ISHPEMING, MI--   Cliffs Natural Resources has named an Ishpeming man assistant general manager of its Michigan operations.

Chad Asgaard will be responsible for maintenance and operations at the Tilden and Empire mines’ processing plants.

Asgaard has been with cliffs for 15 years, serving most recently as area manager of the Empire plant.  He graduated from Ishpeming High School, received a mechanical engineering technology degree from Northern Michigan University, and earned a Master’s degree in business from the University of Phoenix.

ISHPEMING, MI – The Tilden Mine is resuming iron ore pellet production after being stopped for about a week to replace an electric cable. Cleveland-based Cliffs Natural Resources’ says pellet production is scheduled to resume Friday night at the mine near Ishpeming.

Pellet production stopped May 10 after a high temperature reading was found in the cable.

Another shutdown is planned in early June for maintenance.
