two-vehicle accident

MARQUETTE, MI--   Several injuries were reported in two accidents on US-41 South in Marquette Thursday.

City Police say the first, two-vehicle accident happened around 10 a.m.  Three children were taken to Upper Peninsula Health System Marquette with non-life-threatening injuries.  One of the drivers was cited for driving too fast for conditions. 

MARQUETTE, MI--   Minor injuries are reported in a two-vehicle crash in Marquette Tuesday. 

The head-on collision happened around 12:45 p.m. on Third Street in front of Snowbound Books.  One person was taken to U.P. Health System Marquette with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Police say slippery road conditions were a factor in the accident.  One of the drivers was cited for careless driving.

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Gwinn man was arrested following a two-vehicle crash in Marquette Monday. 

City Police say the 36-year-old was southbound on McClellan Avenue near Harbor Hills Drive around 9:30 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle.  It slid into the northbound lanes and struck a vehicle driven by a 24-year-old Palmer man. 

The two drivers and a couple of passengers in the northbound vehicle were taken to U.P. Health System Marquette with non-life-threatening injuries.

POWELL TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person has been critically injured in a Powell Township accident involving an SUV and a semi. 

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Thursday around 9:45 p.m. on County Road 550 at County Road KCE.  A Lincoln SUV driven by Donald Fortin, 36, of Big Bay was northbound in whiteout conditions when it hit a northbound M.J. VanDamme semi truck driven by Steven Zarkowski, 58, of Marquette.

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP--   Three people have suffered injuries in a Chocolay Township crash. 

Township Police say the accident happened Saturday around 12:15 p.m. on M-28 just east of Hiawatha. 

Gretchen Klasner of Marquette was eastbound in a Subaru Forrester when she lost control of the vehicle and spun into the path of a westbound Nissan Xterra driven by Patricia Williams of Marquette. 

Both drivers and a passenger in the Williams vehicle were taken to U.P. Health System Marquette.  There’s no word on the extent of their injuries.

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   A two-vehicle accident in Chocolay Township Thursday trapped one woman in her car. 

Township Police say around 11:12 a.m. Michael Poirier, 63, of Sault Ste. Marie was southbound on US-41 when he ran a red light at the intersection of Silver Creek Road.  He hit an eastbound vehicle driven by Sharon Hahka, 75, of Harvey. 

Officials had to use the “jaws of life” to remove Hahka from her vehicle.  She and her passenger were taken to U.P. Health System Marquette with neck and back injuries. 

The accident remains under investigation.  

NEGAUNEE, MI--   One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash in Negaunee Monday.  

Around 10 a.m. City Police were dispatched to the intersection of US-41 and Baldwin Avenue.  They say a vehicle driven by Christa LaForest, 43, of Negaunee had been eastbound on 41 when she tried to turn left onto Baldwin.  She hit a westbound pickup driven by Dan Rose, 69, of Negaunee. 

LaForest sustained injuries and was taken to Upper Peninsula Health System Marquette for treatment. 

Officials believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. 

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was taken to Marquette General Hospital after two cars collided in Chocolay Township. 

The crash happened Wednesday morning on US-41 at the Welcome Center.  Joan Hill, 84, of Harvey pulled out of the Welcome Center parking lot and was hit by a northbound vehicle driven by 36-year-old Mary Welch. 

Hill was taken to MGH for treatment, while Welch sought her own.  

Hill was cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic.

NEGAUNEE, MI--   Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident in Negaunee Monday. 

City police responded to County Road 480 and Michigan Street around 3:30 p.m.  They say an eastbound van driven by Shane Hiltunen, 20, of Ishpeming failed to yield to an eastbound Dodge Stratus when it tried to turn onto Michigan Street.  The van was struck, injuring three passengers inside. 

The injured were taken to Bell Hospital for treatment.  Hiltunen was cited for failing to yield.

MARQUETTE, MI--   One person has been injured in a two-vehicle accident on McClellan Avenue in Marquette.  

City Police say Tuesday around 10:30 p.m. a vehicle driven by a 40-year-old Gwinn man was southbound and passing through the intersection at the bypass on a green light.  He was struck by a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old Manistique man that was eastbound on US-41.

The Gwinn driver was taken to Marquette General Hospital with minor injuries.  The Manistique driver was cited for failing to stop at a red light.
