LANSING, MI (AP)--   Governor Gretchen Whitmer has vetoed Republican-sponsored legislation that would have given additional health providers legal protection from lawsuits in any state-declared emergency and extended the immunity during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has vetoed bills that would have allowed for delayed tax payments.

She cites the harm to local budgets across Michigan and says one measure related to property taxes is “blatantly” unconstitutional. The legislation, vetoed Wednesday, had won overwhelming legislative approval.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   The state Legislature’s GOP leaders say they will delay sending bills to Governor Gretchen Whitmer to change Michigan’s auto insurance system.

Whitmer says she’d veto the plans.

Republicans were poised to send the bills to Whitmer’s desk despite her vow to reject them, but GOP leaders say they’re still hopeful a deal can be reached that’s acceptable to all sides.

Whitmer says she’s willing to bargain with Republicans on a plan to reduce auto insurance premiums. But she says reducing coverage is not the answer.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Governor Rick Snyder will not lower the state’s standards for dumping ballast water in the Great Lakes.

He vetoed a bill with the changes Friday because he’s concerned about invasive species.

Ballast water is collected by large ships in one body of water to help stabilize the ship. Then it’s dumped into other bodies of water, along with whatever plant and animal species collected with it.

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Governor Rick Snyder has vetoed legislation that would have relaxed restrictions on guns that use air-power to shoot pellets, BBs, paintballs, and other projectiles.

The legislation was supported by the NRA and gun rights groups, but opposed by many local government officials who would have lost a lot of authority to regulate air guns within their borders.

The NRA says Michigan is one of only four states that classify air guns as firearms.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Governor Rick Snyder has vetoed a bill that would create an advisory board for a memorial site in the Upper Peninsula honoring Father Jacques Marquette.

The Republican governor says he vetoed it because it implies that the state would help pay for a new museum at the 58-acre site in St. Ignace. He says the project would cost millions of dollars.

The governor says a state board is unnecessary and the work can be done by a community group.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Republican Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has vetoed legislation that would allow concealed weapons in churches, schools and daycare centers.

Snyder said in a release Tuesday that public venues need clear legal authority to ban firearms "if they see fit to do so."

Snyder told The Associated Press Monday he was scrutinizing the bill after Friday's massacre at a Connecticut school. He also drew on memories of a fatal shooting in his college dormitory more than three decades ago.

LANSING, MI (AP)--   A Muslim rights group has urged Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to veto legislation designed to block use of Islamic law in the state should it reach his desk.

A House bill to bar use of "foreign laws that would impair constitutional rights" was on Tuesday's House agenda.  Republican state Representative Dave Agema of Grandville sponsored the bill, which doesn't specifically mention the Islamic legal code called Shariah.

However, the bill's supporters have said they are concerned about the use of Shariah spreading.
