DNR: last year's hunt very safe

LANSING, MI--   Michigan’s 2012 hunting season was the safest in five years.

That’s according to the Department of Natural Resources, which says there was only one fatality in the 15 incidents reported.  2011 saw five fatalities, while 2010 saw three.  There were two fatalities reported each hunting season between 2007 and 2009.

Officials credit Michigan’s hunter education program with the low rate of incidents over the past few years.  Law Enforcement Division Chief Gary Hagler says the DNR continues to emphasize the importance of wearing hunter orange, safe firearm handling, and mentoring young hunters.
