Grass fire burns acreage in Schoolcraft County

MANISTIQUE, MI--   Nearly 20 acres were burned and 12 structures threatened during a grass fire near Manistique Wednesday.

Department of Public Safety officials say fire escaped from a burn barrel at 1515N West Kendall Road around 12:30 p.m. and threatened numerous homes and adjacent wildland.

The Michigan DNR Fire Division, Hiawatha Volunteer Fire Department, Germfask Fire Department, Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department, and local residents battled the blaze for two hours.  No injuries were reported.

Penny Carlson has been identified as the person who started the fire.  She’s been charged with allowing a fire to escape and will be held liable for fire suppression costs incurred by the DNR and Manistique Public Safety.
