MARQUETTE, MI (AP)-- An effort is underway in Marquette to get backpacks filled with supplies to help homeless people survive the winter.
The Mining Journal reports that Marquette County has about 500 homeless people. The emergency kits are being assembled at Thrivent Financial in Marquette.
Thrivent consultant Theresa Sell says the effort started with a $250 grant from the company and grew with a Facebook plea to include backpacks to hold items such as hats, socks and food.
The Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency donated 50 backpacks.
