Details of missing hiker's survival released

MUNISING, MI--   More details have emerged surrounding the reappearance of a hiker declared missing at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Kara Moore, 55, had been hiking with family members last Friday in the Beaver Creek Wilderness Area. When the group got to the trailhead parking lot they noticed Moore was missing. Officials launched a land and water search that lasted five days.

Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. hikers on the Beaver Lake Trail saw a woman matching Moore’s description walking toward them. They gave her food and water and contacted park authorities.

Moore was taken by ambulance to Munising Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for dehydration and muscle fatigue, then kept overnight for observation.

Officials say Moore suffered a brain injury when she was younger that affected her short-term memory. She remembers sleeping next to a log and drinking from a creek, but doesn’t recall how she survived or where she hiked and slept.
