Teen snowmobiler seriously injured when he drives into prohibited area

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, MI— A 19-year-old NMU student suffered serious injuries in a snowmobile accident over the weekend.

It happened Saturday around 2:50 p.m. off County Road JJT in Marquette Township. The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the driver was on DNR Snowmobile Trail #14 when he decided to exit the trail and operate in a prohibited area. He was driving at a high rate of speed when he went over a steep embankment. The snowmobile flipped over a couple of times.

The student was extricated using rope rescue techniques and brought to a rescue sled. He was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Officials say excessive speed and operating in unfamiliar terrain were contributing factors in the accident.
