LANSING, MI-- Michigan State Police say more people died in crashes over the Memorial Day holiday period this year than last.
Preliminary reports indicate eight people lost their lives in eight separate crashes over the extended weekend. Last year six people died in five different accidents.
Troopers say of the eight crashes, seat belts were not used in four; alcohol was a known factor in one; one victim was a bicyclist; and two involved motorcycles. A helmet was not worn in one and it’s unknown if a helmet was worn in the other.
The Memorial Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday to 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
