Applications to be a Porkies artist now available

ONTONAGON, MI (AP)--   Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is accepting applications for its Artist-in-Residence program.

The program offers writers, composers and visual and performing artists a chance to spend at least two weeks in the park. They get to use a rustic cabin on the Little Union River and are offered a three-night backcountry permit.

They are expected to contribute an artwork inspired by their experience in the park and to give public demonstrations or talks.

The Porkies includes 25 miles of Lake Superior shorelines, four inland lakes, entire river systems, waterfalls and a virgin forest of eastern hemlock and northern hardwoods.

Applications for the 2014 spring, summer and fall and the 2015 winter residencies must be received by March 31.
