LANSING, MI-- Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is warning those affected by the Duck Lake Fire to be aware of home repair scams. Schuette says it’s important for residents to do their homework before hiring a contractor because con artists are ready to take advantage.
In a consumer alert issued Wednesday, Schuette advises residents to take some time to absorb what happened before making any hurried decisions regarding rebuilding. Other advice includes contacting your insurance agent to find out what’s covered and what your deductible will be, get everything in writing, and never pay in cash. Using credit cards offers protection if a repair you’ve paid for isn’t completed.
Those who believe they may have been contacted by a scam artists or unscrupulous contractor should file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office at www.michigan.gov/ag.
