LSSU to expand Aquatic Research Lab

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   Officials at Lake Superior State University say they're excited about the

prospect of opening a planned Center for Freshwater Research and Education now that they have backing from Governor Rick Snyder for the $12 million project.

Snyder included funding for the center Feb. 11 in his proposed $54 billion budget for the 2016 fiscal year.

The center would involve an expansion of the Upper Peninsula school's existing Aquatic Research Laboratory.

The university says it would be housed in a building near the Cloverland Electrical Cooperative power plant on the St. Marys River.

The Aquatic Research laboratory opened in 1977.
