A walk to honor water set for the Keweenaw this weekend

KEWEENAW, MI— The People of the Heart Water Walkers are journeying through the Keweenaw to honor water.

Members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community are assisting in the event, which begins at 7 a.m. Saturday at Sand Point Lighthouse in Baraga. It will conclude Monday—Indigenous Peoples Day—at the Copper Harbor Lighthouse.

Women lead the ceremony carrying a copper vessel filled with Nibi, the Anishinaabe word for water. The water continually moves through the 1842 ceded territory throughout the day. An eagle staff is carried beside them as protector.

More information is on the People of the Heart Facebook page.
