Panel to set rules for early-season migratory bird hunting

  LANSING, Mich. (AP) — State wildlife policymakers are expected to set early-season regulations for hunting migratory birds, including Canada geese and teal.
The Michigan Natural Resources Commission has scheduled a vote on the rules for its monthly meeting Thursday in Lansing. The commission sets hunting policy for the Department of Natural Resources.
DNR division chiefs have suggested that goose season begin Sept. 1 and end Sept. 10 in the Upper Peninsula and in Huron, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. In the rest of the state, it would continue through Sept. 15. The daily bag limit would remain at five geese.
An experimental season for small ducks known as teal would run from Sept. 1-7.
The commission also will discuss deer management and hear reports on topics such as timber harvesting and Michigan's draft water strategy.
