ESCANABA, MI-- Nearly 900 people benefited from a mobile food pantry in Escanaba Wednesday.
That’s according to Detective Sergeant Anthony LaPlant of the Escanaba Public Safety Department, which hosted the event. He says the food giveaway was scheduled to start at 10 a.m., but food distribution began an hour early because of a lineup of cars two blocks long.
LaPlant says a small army of volunteers handed out about 10,500 pounds of food to 288 families, supporting a total of around 888 people. He says the success of the mobile food pantry clearly demonstrates the need to fight food insecurity in the area every day.
The event was sponsored by the Escanaba DPS, the Community Foundation for Delta County, Bill Marmalick Premier Real Estate, Crawford Funeral Homes, JD Machine Tech, and the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank.
