MARQUETTE, MI-- Marquette Police are cautioning people about venturing onto Lake Superior ice.
Officers say no ice is safe ice, and people need to heed the following information.
They say ice that forms over flowing water is generally weaker, constantly shifts, and can be unstable. Ice covered in snow is often thinner and hides cracks and holes that cannot support a person’s weight. With constantly changing weather conditions ice freezes and thaws throughout the day, so ice conditions can change from hour to hour. Never go out on the ice alone. And if someone does fall through the ice, call 9-1-1 and throw a rope, tree branch, or anything that can reach them without you becoming a victim yourself.
