Trooper gets Lifesaving Award

NEGAUNEE, MI--   A Michigan State Police trooper from the Negaunee Post has been recognized for saving a life.

The MSP Board of Awards reviewed an incident investigated by Trooper Joseph Ballone and concluded he should receive the department’s Lifesaving Award.

On March 5 Ballone stopped a vehicle for speeding. He checked the driver and vehicle identification at his patrol car, but when he returned to the driver he found her slumped to the side with her eyes half-closed. Ballone started CPR when her pulse faded and stopped.

Officials say the woman’s employer called her phone and made contact with Ballone. The employer said the driver had abused opioids in the past and may have relapsed. Ballone administered NARCAN as the ambulance arrived on the scene.

The driver was taken to the hospital and made a full recovery.

Officials say if not for the actions of Trooper Ballone, the woman would not have survived.
