PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, MI— Michigan State Police took an armed man into custody after he barricaded himself in a Portage Township home.
Sunday around 2:25 p.m., troopers from the Calumet Post responded to a report of a man suffering a mental crisis in Hurontown. The subject had apparently barricaded himself in the upstairs of a residence. A woman and two small children were also in the home at the time.
Police escorted the woman and children out of the home to a safe location. They made contact with the suspect, who exited the residence a short time later.
The man was taken to UPHS-Portage for a psychiatric evaluation.
No injuries were reported.
Troopers were assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, City of Houghton Police Department, City of Hancock Police Department, and Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services.
