Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race canceled

NEWBERRY, MI— An Eastern U.P. sled dog race has been canceled, due to lack of snow.

Officials with the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race—based in Newberry—say warmer temperatures and lack of snow have made parts of the trail bare and unsafe. Only 3 inches of heavy, wet snow has fallen over the past couple of days, and melting snowbanks means pulling snow into the road isn’t an option.

On Wednesday the Board of Directors voted to cancel the event, which doesn’t use already-groomed snowmobile trails.

The race was due to take place Saturday and Sunday at Muskallonge Lake State Park. It’s part of the Superior Crown Sled Dog Series with the UP-200 and Copper Dog 150.
