Marquette scam seeks personal info

MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette Police are cautioning residents about a phone scam reported in the area.

The scam involves altered caller ID information, which is known as “spoofing”.

Officers say several residents have received a call that displays “Marquette Police Department” and the department phone number, 906-228-0400.  When the victim answers, a man with an accent tells them their identity has been stolen and they need to supply some personal information.

Officers say if anyone receives such a call, just hang up.  Never give out personal information on incoming calls, and use a telephone number obtained by alternate means to contact the agency or company in question.
