Phone scams targeting Marquette County residents

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning residents about scams being reported in the area.

Deputies say con artists are spoofing the office’s phone number and posing as staff. In one scam, the caller tells the victim their computer’s been hacked and they need to send money to fix it. In the other scam, someone poses as a now-retired sergeant and tells the victim there’s a warrant for their arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office says always use extreme caution when paying someone over the phone, especially if they call you.

If you ever doubt the legitimacy of someone you are speaking to, even if the caller ID is correct, look up the phone number independently and call that number to verify the personnel.
