Redistricting initiative has path to the November ballot

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   A proposal to change the way the state draws its political district lines must go on the November ballot.

The Michigan Court of Appeals Thursday denied a request to keep a measure by the group Voters Not Politicians off the ballot. The opposition group, Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution, said the redistricting proposal was essentially a redrafting of the state Constitution.

The Court of Appeals disagreed. It said the proposal doesn’t change so much of the constitution that it would interfere with the fundamental operation of government. So the complaint doesn’t have any merit.

The court ordered the Board of State Canvassers to certify the petition for the general election. Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution says it will appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.
