TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)-- The federal government is awarding $645,000 to Michigan and other Great Lakes states to remove structures that prevent fish from migrating up and down rivers and streams.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the grants—slated for Dickinson County, among others—will support removal of 12 barriers and reconnect more than 91 stream miles.
Fish passage has been hampered over the years by culverts, dams and dikes. The structures have served beneficial purposes such as flood control and electricity generation, but fish have paid a price.
The agency says removing some barriers helps reverse the harmful effects.
