HOUGHTON, MI-- The Buffalo Reef Task Force has come up with a Draft Preliminary Alternatives Analysis for protecting a fish spawning habitat.
The Department of Natural Resources has been working on a plan to protect the reef off the eastern side of the Keweenaw Peninsula from shifting stamp sands—created by the copper industry. Buffalo Reef is an important spawning area for Lake Superior whitefish and lake trout.
The draft report describes 13 strategies for managing the stamp sands. The task force wants public input on whether it should consider other strategies and on any adjustments to the management strategies or risks described in the report.
Comments will be accepted through March 8.
