MARQUETTE, MI-- The Superior Watershed Partnership is offering free milkweed seeds to residents in an effort to expand habitat for species like the Monarch butterfly.
The SWP says loss of habitat, pesticide and herbicide use and climate change all pose threats to the butterfly’s migration and survival. Milkweed is the only wildflower the Monarch will lay its eggs on and the only plant its caterpillars will eat as they mature.
The milkweed seed packets are available to residents in every Upper Peninsula county. They’re available on a first-come, first-served basis.
