HOUGHTON, MI— Three U.P. maritime projects will benefit from grants from the state Office of Future Mobility and Electrification and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center received nearly $100,000 from EGLE to advance water-related science.

Company DockTech got $8,000 to install equipment on a research vessel to enhance navigation of the GLRC’s Marine Autonomous Research Site.

And the Mackinac Economic Alliance received $100,000 to explore, in partnership with the GLRC, clean electrification of ferries traveling to and from Mackinac Island. Michigan Tech will analyze the energy requirements of the ferries and recommend the technology best suited to generate and store electricity for new or retrofitted ferries in the Straits of Mackinac.
