RICHMOND TOWNSHIP, MI— State officials are seeking the public’s help in finding out who dumped two barrels in Marquette County’s Richmond Township.
The 55-gallon drums were found in a water-filled ditch off County Road 565 near Palmer. The Michigan Departments of Natural Resources and Environment, Great Lakes and Energy were notified Wednesday.
Officials say a small release of chemical substances from the barrels was stopped, and an absorbent boom was placed around the site to prevent further spread of the materials. Water from the ditch flows into Warner Creek and Warner Falls. Contractors have removed and disposed of the drums.
One of the barrels is reddish-orange and the other is green. Both have a white stripe across the mid-section. The orange barrel's markings say it contained "Safe-Tee Solvent" and the other is marked to contain "Quaker State Motor Oil."
Anyone with information regarding the dumping is asked to call 517-927-0860.
