Wildfire forces Eastern U.P. sled dog race to new venue

LUCE COUNTY, MI (AP)--   Muskallonge Lake State Park near Newberry will host Saturday's Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race.

The mid-distance event had been held the past 13 years at Rainbow Lodge but that and much of a trail system were destroyed this year by the Duck Lake wildfire that swept through northern Luce County.

Held the first weekend in January, the race is one of the first of the mushing season and draws mushers from throughout the Midwest, Canada and Alaska.
Professional 12-dog and 8-dog teams will run 60-mile and 40-mile distances. Sports classes of 2-dog to 6-dog teams will run shorter distances.

Muskallonge Lake State Park is west of Sault Ste. Marie.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
