February unemployment in U.P. up a tad

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Upper Peninsula jobless rate edged up slightly in February to 10.5 percent, a gain of 0.2 percentage points over January’s rate of 10.3 percent.  

Eleven of the U.P.’s 15 counties posted higher jobless rates in February, ranging from 0.1 of percentage point in Ontonagon and Dickinson counties to 1.5 percent in Mackinac County. 

Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates were down by 0.4 percent in Luce County and 1.1 percent in Keweenaw County. 

Menominee County had the lowest jobless rate in the U.P. in February, at 7.2 percent, while Mackinac County had the highest rate in Michigan at 24.6 percent. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
