HOUGHTON, MI - Inmates of the Houghton County jail were evacuated for a brief time yesterday (Sunday) because of a possible gas leak. At about 4am, the inmates were moved from the main cell block to a secure area. The Houghton Fire department, Semco Gas company and a local heating professional were called in to the scene… but no harmful concentrations of gas were detected, and the area was determined to be safe.
Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Houghton Police department, Hancock Police department, and Michigan Tech Public Safety.
