Fallen officers to be recognized in Norway

NORWAY, MI--   Various law enforcement agencies are honoring officers killed in the line of duty during a ceremony in Dickinson County Wednesday.

It’s National Police Week, designated in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to honor fallen peace officers.

The Upper Peninsula Peace Officer Memorial will recognize those killed in the line of duty from the U.P., Wisconsin and Canada—specifically 33-year-old Deputy James Pollock of the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, who was killed in 1913, and Norway officer Kenneth Moraska, killed in 1971.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Recreation Lanes in Iron Mountain, followed by a police procession on US-2 to the Norway School.  The memorial will start at 10 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.

For more information call the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post at 774-2122.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
