Asbestos complicates firefighting at Presque Isle power plant

MARQUETTE, MI--   Firefighters had to undergo decontamination procedures after they were called to a fire at the WE Energies power plant in Marquette.

The fire department was called Tuesday around 9:20 p.m. for a fire on the roof of Building #4.  Flames were confined to a diesel exhaust ventilator used in an asbestos abatement operation.

Officials say the incident was complicated by potential asbestos contamination of firefighters, who were decontaminated at the site.

The ventilator sustained damage.

The Marquette Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
