Intense early-morning fire in Negaunee

NEGAUNEE, MI--   A Negaunee garage and sauna are destroyed, following an early-morning fire Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to 327 Cherry Street around 3:50 a.m. by a passerby who saw smoke.

The garage was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.  Heat from the blaze was so intense it blew out windows in the back of the house, melted siding on a neighboring home, and damaged another garage.

The owner of the residence, Sandra Whitford, was able to get out of the house safely.  She’s being assisted by the Pigs ‘N’ Heat Fire Relief Fund.

No injuries are reported.  A vehicle, the garage and its contents were destroyed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
