MARQUETTE, MI--   The Diocese of Marquette has a new bishop.

Pope Francis has named the Reverend John Doerfler to the post.  Doerfler was most recently the Vicar General of the Diocese of Green Bay.  He becomes the 13th bishop, following Alexander Sample, who served the diocese for seven years and was named Archbishop of Portland, Orgeon in April.

Doerfler has been a priest for 22 years.  He was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Doerfler will be installed as bishop February 11 at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
