New murals on display at Escanaba AMVETS hall

dailypress.net

Escanaba - AMVETS Post 123 of Escanaba hired a local artist who transformed its basement meeting place and dance hall with two military-themed murals.

The 'Daily Press' of Escanaba reports that retired Escanaba art teacher Harry Nelson painted the murals on two walls in the basement. That is where local AMVETS and the public gather for country music and dancing.

One mural shows the five service branches with an Army tank, Navy boat, Air Force plane, the Iwo Jima Marines memorial and Coast Guard helicopter. There is also a fallen soldier symbol of a firearm inside boots with a helmet on top.

The second mural wall shows an eagle and U.S. flag, with a silhouette of a female soldier facing a male soldier.

Hans Ahlström is the host of several programs, including the daily musical variety show Weekday, the mostly straight ahead jazz show Night Studio, the self-explanatory Blues Today, and the eclectic Sound Spectrum. You can also hear Hans as the local host of NPR's All Things Considered news magazine. He also helps manage Public Radio 90's web content, interviews local and visiting writers and artists, works with NMU student interns, and writes the occasional news story.
