Secretary of State helps procrastinators with renewal text

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan is launching a service so drivers can be reminded with a text message or email to renew their expiring license plate tab.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says those who sign up will be reminded a few weeks before their birthday. She says she hears all the time from customers who remember at the last minute to renew their license plate and have to visit a branch office on their birthday.

People can sign up for text or email reminders at their local Secretary of State office.  Or they can visit www.michigan.gov/sos or text "MSOS RENEW" to 468311.

The reminder emails and text messages won't replace the renewal mailing that's sent 45 days before the plate expires.
