Skiers revving up for Noquemanon

MARQUETTE, MI--   Trail conditions are excellent for this year’s Noquemanon Ski Marathon.

That’s according to race coordinator Nicole Dewald, who says about 550 skiers are signed up for the full 50K.  She notes that number is down from previous years.

“There is another race in Hayward, Wisconsin called the Seeley Classic on the same weekend,” she says.  “And also we’re down because everywhere in the area seems to have plenty of snow and usually we’re a destination for the snow in low-snow years.”

Dewald says volunteers are still needed, especially Saturday for the pickup of racer bags, which contain the skiers’ warm clothes.  Volunteers are also needed at the finish line of the 24K snow bike and 12K skijour on Sunday morning.  To volunteer, send an email to info@noquemanon.com.

Events begin Friday at 3 p.m. at the Forestville Trailhead and conclude Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
