ESCANABA, MI (AP)-- Delta County will receive a $450,000 state loan to redevelop a vacant property in Escanaba.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says a new building that will house three local businesses will be located on the property.
The funds come from the Brownfield Redevelopment Program, which provides funding to local governments to clean up contaminated properties that are targeted for redevelopment. Brownfields are vacant or abandoned properties with known or suspected environmental contamination.
The Escanaba property is in an industrial area and contains contaminated fill material, including ash and construction debris.
The loan funds will be used to assess the property's condition, get rid of the tainted material and make the site safe for re-use.
