WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The Chippewa County International Airport is getting more than $3 million from the federal government.
The airport near Sault Ste. Marie will receive a $3,384,368 dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The money will be used to rehabilitate the runway.
Airport Manager Tami Beseau says replacing the cement surface of the main runway with asphalt will improve safety and security at the airport. She says it will help thousands of travelers get to and from the Eastern U.P. during the summer vacation season.
